Quick Update

Paris was good as always. Switzerland was AMAZING...I went skydiving out of a helicopter and parachuted past waterfalls down into the valley. I will never forget it and hope to come back to Switzerland in the future. I am now in Florence and tomorrow we get to tour the city. We are staying at a resort out of the city (it sort of reminds me of Club Med). Then on June 4th I'm off to Serbia (from Rome) and then I start my own travels through Eastern Europe. Can't wait!

I hope to have some mroe time to type up everything I have written in my travel journal so you can hear about all of the amazing places I have experienced.

Love you and miss you ALL!

Cheers,

Jess

And I'm off!

I have officially left Glasgow and am sitting on the train on my way to London. I have 2 duffles/backpacks, a small canvas bag and another stuffed backpack. This morning my cab drive was SO amazing and parked the car, got out, and helped me carry my luggage to the train. I don't know what I'm going to do trying to get off the train and get to my hostel in London. I don't even want to think about that hassle.

So, for those of you who don't know, I am leaving Glasgow and traveling around Europe until June 18th when I fly home. Tomorrow morning I meet up with a tour group at 6:30am and we head from London to Paris. We are then going to spend two nights in Paris, two nights in the Swiss Alps, two nights in Florence, and one night in Rome. When the trip ends in Rome I will be hopping on a plane from Rome to Belgrade, Serbia where my second cousin(?) will be waiting for me at the airport. I will then spend 3 or 4 nights in Serbia. (Who knows, I might even want to spend more time there because of how exhausted I'll be from traveling...but there are a lot of places on my list that I want to check off.) Right now, my plan is to go from Belgrade to Budapest, stay in Budapest for a couple nights and then move onto Krakow. My goal is to visit Auschwitz. From Krakow I will travel to Austria, most likely stay in Vienna for a night or two and then finally make my way to Prague. I will be staying in Prague for a few nights before my flight leaves from Prague (to London) on June 16th. Once I am finally back in London, I will gather my bags that I will be leaving there when I get to London today, and prepare myself to fly out on June 18th.

This is going to be a long, exhausting, but exciting trip and I can't wait for it to start. Right now I am traveling alone, but who knows, maybe I'll find someone who is doing the same route as me. (That would be my ideal situation.) I'm definitely a little nervous, but I think it's going to be a really good trip for me to learn how to get around on my own in countries where I don't speak the language. There are bound to be some bumps in the road, but I hope it goes pretty smoothly. I will try to do small updates on my blog along the way just so you all know where I am, but they will have to be from internet cafes. I will not be traveling with my laptop. Only a backpack, a notebook, and an emergency cell phone. I love you all so much and please send me emails so I have something to look forward to when I find an internet cafe!

Love Always,

Jess

I'm horrible...I know!

Well, I have been absolutely horrible about keeping you all updated on my life abroad. I AM ALIVE! I have just been enjoying my time here in Glasgow, traveling around Scotland with friends, taking small day trips, continuing with my art classes at the Glasgow School of Art and practicing bagpiping. Spring break was amazing with my parents...we traveled all around Ireland, Scotland, and we even made it to London after my parents missed their flight home due to the volcanic ash cloud. I will be sure to update you all on everything I have been up to over the past two months, I'll start writing it down and post the highlights ASAP. I just wanted to share a photo album with all of you of my past couple of weeks in Scotland.

I went to the Beltane Fire Festival in Edinburgh with my friend Morgan. I ended up missing the train back to Glasgow so I stayed in her flat for the night and returned to Glasgow in the morning (after a little shopping).

On Friday, I took a trip with 5 of my friends to the Isle of Skye which is a beautiful island in the north of Scotland. We took a train (5 hours) from Glasgow to Mallaig. On the way up there, we went over the bridge they used for the Hogwarts Express in Harry Potter. When we got to Mallaig, we hopped on the ferry to Skye where we were welcomed by the owner of our hostel. He came to pick us up in his car, and dropped us off for lunch. He returned an hour or two later and drove us to the hostel. We realized then that we should've brought food to cook in the hostel, so we had to call a taxi to take us to the only food store in the area. We bought pasta and tomato sauce and decided to pick fresh mussels down at the water. After dropping the food off in our kitchen, we walked down to the water, soaked up the sun, and picked a bunch of mussels off the rocks that the boys (Liam and Ted) cooked for us.

After dinner we enjoyed just hanging out, looking at the beautiful view from our hostel, and learning more about each other. When we were about to go to bed, I told Laura to look out the window because the stars were so bright. We then decided to get out of bed, knock on the boys' door and go stargazing outside. We were outside for an hour just looking up at the stars and seeing about 5 magnificent shooting stars and a bunch of constellations. Nobody had ever seen so many shooting stars in their life.

The next morning we left the hostel at 10am after the boys made us a breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast (what would we do without them?). We walked around for a while just looking at the scenery and enjoying the sunny day. We really lucked out with weather, and even got some color. We are all so pale from cold, gray Glasgow that it was even nice to be red. We walked back to the ferry, went to Mallaig, had an amazing lunch, and then took the train back to Glasgow.

On Sunday we went to the Gourock Highland Games. What we didn't realize when we planned the trip was that there was also a bagpiping championship that my instructor was competing in. When we got there, we enjoyed listening to all of the piping, eating Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties, and watching the heavyweight competitions. These men did everything from shot put to caber toss. It was so much fun to watch. After the piping championships (that my instructor's pipe band WON) we were talking to him and he offered to give us a ride home on the pipe band's bus. So, we left the games at 6:30 (after being there for 6 hours) and took the bus home with the whole band. It was a very good, Scottish adventure-filled weekend and I absolutely loved every part of it.

Love and miss you all!

Jess

Aux Champs-Elysees

Three Tuesdays ago, a bunch of the girls were in the mood for sushi, so we got dressed up and went downtown to a cool sushi restaurant. It was a great dinner and I will definitely be going back. (We also found out that if we print something out from their website before coming in to eat, students can get 25% off their meal.) The restaurant is sort of futuristic. Instead of boats carrying the sushi, it is on a track that moves by all of the tables.

After sushi, we went for a drink at Vodka Wodka on Ashton Lane. Ashton Lane has a bunch of great pubs and bars, including the Wee Pub that we went to a couple weeks ago.

Wednesday I stayed in and packed for Paris. I was scared that RyanAir would charge me for the size of my bag, but it ended up being okay the next day at the airport. Thursday, Briana and I left the flat at 11am to go to the library and we printed out our bus tickets for the trip back to Glasgow on Sunday. We then hopped on the underground to Glasgow Central where we took the train to Prestwick airport. We had to wait for a while at the airport, but we met a really nice guy named James. He said you have to wait close to the gate because when they open up the gate, everyone runs to get in line (since there are no assigned seats). I don't know what we would have done without James getting to Paris. We made it on the flight and somehow sat in the 5th row. The flight was only about an hour and fifteen minutes. James helped us get to the bus to take us to Paris, which was 70 minutes, and then he showed us the metro because our cell phones didn't work. Somehow we were able to find the hotel that Briana's friends were staying at near Notre Dame after walking down St. Michel. The four of us found a great place for dinner with a fixed menu. For about 20 Euro, I got onion soup, a salmon main course, and creme brulee. We all shared a bottle of wine and ended up staying at the restaurant just talking until 11:45pm. After dropping Briana's friends off at their hotel, we made it to the metro by 12:50am and realized there were no trains running. Thankfully we found a nice guy who spoke English who told us we would be better off just taking a taxi to our hostel. We had such a hard time telling our taxi driver where the hostel was, but we finally found it and Briana's other friends were waiting for us there. Our 10-person was all women and the beds were hilarious. I loved the curtains!

My bed was on the top right.

Here is our hostel during the day...St. Christopher's Hostel.

On Friday, we started off the day at 9am and made it to breakfast (of baguettes and nutella) downstairs at 9:30am. Our first tourist stop of the day was the Eiffel Tower. We took MANY pictures and took the elevators to the very top. It was a beautiful day and you could see all of Paris. The last time I was in Paris, my parents and I went to the top and you could not see the ground because it was so gray, rainy, and cloudy. My only memory of the Eiffel Tower was bad, so now I absolutely love it. It's funny how the weather can affect your experience and mood so drastically.

After the Eiffel Tower, we went to Notre Dame and met up with more people. Notre Dame was absolutely gorgeous inside, and we even got a picture of the Hunchback.

On our way to lunch, we walked by a restaurant called Le Loch Ness...I guess it was a sign not to forget about Scotland.

We had lunch in a cute cafe with the sun shining down on us in the glass covered seating area. I had another baguette (this time with ham and cheese) and then we decided to take the metro to the Arc de Triomphe.

We walked along the Champs-Elysees towards the Arc de Triomphe and it was beautiful. We all wanted to walk to the top because we thought it was free, but I guess we read the tourist book wrong. It was around 7 Euro and none of us were willing to pay that much to walk up the stairs. So, we took more pictures and then hopped on the metro to the stop called Madeleine.

The girls wanted to do some shopping, so Eric and I went to see the obelisk. We ended up catching the view at sunset and it was gorgeous. I have so many pictures of the Eiffel Tower at sunset. I just couldn't help myself.

After the shopping trip, we wanted to hit up another touristy spot and see the Bastille. Well, for the amount of walking we did to find a single monument in the middle of a busy street, we decided that was enough for the day. After the Bastille, we went back to the hostel, got dressed up for dinner, and asked where the best area to eat was. The woman at the hostel told us to eat in Montmarte and we found a restaurant called Villa Montmarte. After an okay dinner, we found a bar/club, did some dancing, met a bunch of Irish guys, and enjoyed speaking English with them. After the club, I had my first crepe in Paris and then we took a taxi back to the hostel.

On Saturday, on our way to the Louvre, we found a cafe with views of the Eiffel Tower. I had a croque madame and it was wonderful. After breakfast, we walked along the Siene and finally arrived at the Louvre. In the Louvre, I found a room full of many of the Italian paintings I studied in my art history class last semester. I couldn't believe that I was looking at these paintings from only a foot away. It was a great discovery and I definitely could have spent the whole day in that room, but we had to keep moving. After a long time at the Louvre, we walked towards the Musee de Orsay and found a little cafe for lunch. By the time everyone was done eating and we made it to the museum, we realized we missed the ticket sales by 15 minutes! Since we couldn't walk around the museum, we wanted to find somewhere to get crepes. Most of the girls got crepes and after they were done eating, we hopped on the metro and went back to the hostel.

We decided to eat dinner at the hostel because the burgers looked great and it wasn't too expensive. The hostel is right on the water so we had a beautiful view out the window from our table.

After dinner, we got back on the metro and met our other friends at the Eiffel Tower stop. It was freezing outside so we quickly took some pictures, walked around, and admired the sparkling Eiffel Tower. When we got back on the subway, the 3 people we met up with had not eaten dinner yet so they wanted to get some food. I was not in the mood to just sit at a restaurant and watch people eat, so I told them I was going to the Moulin Rouge. Briana and Eileen decided they didn't want to sit around either, so the three of us went the opposite way on the metro.

Even though it was freezing outside and we didn't stay for long, I got some good pictures of the Moulin Rouge at night and was satisfied with my little adventure. When we got back on the metro, we found out where the other 3 were and we met up with them at the restaurant. I had my second crepe in Paris while they finished their meal and then we all said goodbye to each other. The three of them staying in the hotel had to leave early in the morning on Sunday, so we wouldn't be seeing them again.

On Sunday, we woke up, packed, and checked out of the hostel. We ate our last breakfast in Paris and then got on the metro to the Musee de Orsay since we weren't able to go the day before. On Sundays, the museums are free (we would have gotten in free with our student IDs anyway) so there was a big line. We waited in line for a little while, walked around Orsay, I saw some art that we've been studying in my art history class here, and then we were on our way.

After the museum, we walked up Rue Royale and found a great cafe for lunch, with a Starbucks next door. After a huge lunch and feeling pretty full, we decided to walk all along the Champs-Elysees. We spent the rest of the day walking along it and even did a little shopping. We saw the Arc de Triomphe again, and then took the metro back to the hostel to get our luggage. Once we got our luggage, we took the metro to the bus station, and then got on the bus to the airport.

Our wonderful weekend in Paris was over and we made it back to Glasgow safely. Even though I had a great weekend and we lucked out with sunny weather, I was very happy to be back in Glasgow. Paris was so expensive and it made me appreciate being in Glasgow and speaking English. I know that might sound horrible, but I just wasn't interested in trying to speak French for three days.

Now it is 3 weeks later, and I just had a fun adventure with my friend Nicole. She flew from New York to come visit me in Scotland for 6 days and we got to see so much of Glasgow. A long post about our week will be coming soon. Today I will be doing some work on my art history essay and having an interview for an internship in San Francisco.

Love and miss you all!

Love Always,
Jess

Go Rangers!

The last thing I wrote about was Photography and writing my cover letter. I pretty much finished my cover letter, now I'm just waiting for some comments so I can edit it even more. We had three girls coming to stay with us this week so we borrowed an extra mattress from one of our flat mates, and we bought a little air mattress. Before they arrived, we made a fort at the entrance of our room.

The fort we made with the extra mattresses/blankets in our room before the girls arrived.

Thursday, I had bagpiping from 4-5pm and it was one of the coolest classes we've had so far. We were led into the bar in the Piping Centre, and there ended up being a concert in the bar for us. It was beautiful. Piero Ricci was playing an Italian bagpipe, also called a Zampogna. Maurizio Marino played with Piero on his oboe. My jaw dropped as soon as they started playing and I could not bring it back up the entire performance. I have fallen in love with the Zampogna. It is a beautiful instrument, especially accompanied by an oboe. CLICK HERE to watch a video of Piero and Maurizio (and Piero's band). Piero is in the middle playing the Italian bagpipe, and Maurizio is the second from the right playing the oboe. (At 4 minutes and 30 seconds, Piero and Maurizio have a small duet.)

After bagpiping, we came back to our flat and hung out for a few hours before going to Bamboo, our favorite club downtown. Laura's 3 friends were here for a couple nights, so we had 3 girls sleeping in our room on Thursday and Friday. We took the girls out to Bamboo and had a great time. We have now made friends with the bouncer, Stewart, and the security guard, Paul.

Friday, our friend Ted was in a performance downtown, so we all went to support him. It was so much fun seeing him perform and the play wasn't too bad either. He kept talking about how horrible it was going to be, but I actually really enjoyed it. After the play we walked to the Underground, through George Square, and took the subway back to our flat. We all got dressed up for another night of dancing...only this time we went to Cheesy Pop because it was open until 3am instead of 2am.

Saturday, Laura and her 3 friends went to Edinburgh, while I stayed at the flat. When Laura got back (her 3 friends were already on their way back to Ireland) we had breakfast for dinner. Sarah made us french toast, Liam made eggs and bacon, and Briana was in charge of the toast. :-P

Since we had already gone out dancing for the previous 2 nights, we wanted to make it a pub night last night. We stayed on the West End of Glasgow, spent most of the night hanging out at 2 pubs, and then we were back at our flat by around 1:30am...an early night for us.

This morning (Sunday) we woke up, got ready and went to Curlers down the street to watch the Rangers/Celtic football (or soccer) game. It is a huge deal for Glasgow fans because both of these football teams are from Glasgow. One of our friends is a huge Rangers fan, so I couldn't go against the Rangers if I was going to be sitting at the same table as him. At around 12:30, the game started and we were rooting for the Rangers. (Kenneth Branagh, my favorite Shakespeare actor/director, is also a fan of the Rangers...that's reason enough for me to root for them.) The game was intense; 0-0 for the whole 90 minutes and then in the 3 minute overtime, the Rangers scored and won! Everyone in Curlers went crazy and then it was time for me, Briana, and Laura to get some food. (That's all we were thinking about most of the game, of course.) We walked up the road to Beanscene, a cute coffee shop with our favorite chili bowls. It was a great late lunch, and now we're all back at the flat relaxing. Another week of classes starts tomorrow and then Briana and I are off to Paris on Thursday. I can't believe we're just flying to Paris like it's nothing...I hope the weather will be okay.

Love and miss you all!

Love Always,
Jess

A Parents Filled Weekend

Friday night we went to Cheesy Pop, like always. The dance ended at around 2am and then we headed back to our flats to get some sleep before our trip to Edinburgh the next day.

Saturday morning, Laura and I slept in a little bit, and then at 1:15pm, we met everyone at the Hillhead Underground to take the subway to the Queen Street Bus/Train Station. We hopped on the 2 o'clock train to Edinburgh and got there in about 45 minutes. The train ride was so easy, I can't believe I haven't been going over there more often. We got off the train and, immediately, the boys (Liam and Ted) led the way to some vintage shop where they sell inexpensive kilts. They wanted to buy one, so we waited while they tried a few on. It was very entertaining.

After kilt shopping, we found out that Laura C.'s parents were at the hotel and ready for us to check in. Our friend, Laura Connelly, had her parents visiting this past weekend and they invited all of us to come along to Edinburgh with Laura. They bought us two hotel rooms for Saturday night so that Laura, and the 6 others (me, Briana, Sarah, Lindsey, Laura, and Liam), could stay together. After we checked into the hotel and dropped off our bags, Laura's parents took us to a pub called "World's End". We had a beer (or two), great conversation, and then we were off to dinner at Deacon Brodie's Tavern. The restaurant was named after Deacon William Brodie, the man who inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. We had to eat at 2 separate tables on opposite sides of the room because it was so crowded and we had 10 people, but it was great nonetheless. Our table was me, Sarah, Liam, Lindsey and Ted. We ordered a haggis appetizer which was unbelievable! I will definitely be ordering haggis again (when I am at a good restaurant). It is really good...I don't understand why so many people are against it. (Just try not to think about what's in it.) After an appetizer of haggis, I had Scottish Steak Pie as my main course and it was very good. Laura's parents paid for our pub drinks and dinner...it was so nice! We are definitely going to send them a thank you card and a little gift.

After dinner, we walked around the Royal Mile and then Ted insisted on taking us all to drinks at a really fancy hotel. It is supposedly Sean Connery's favorite hotel. So, we all got a drink with Laura's parents and then Ted had to leave to go back to Glasgow. As we were leaving, we found out that Ted had paid for all of our drinks! We couldn't believe it...we told him we weren't allowing him to pay for us. (We'll get him back soon enough.) After drinks, we went back to the Holiday Inn Express to get dressed up to go explore the nightlife. My friend, Morgan, from Smith is studying in Edinburgh, so she came to the hotel and I introduced her to all of my Glasgow friends. She took us all out with her friend and we ended up at a Revolution bar. (Revolution bars are all over the UK.) Morgan and her friend didn't stay for long but we stayed at the bar anyway.

Liam and the girls at Revolution

After the bar closed at 1am, we were still wanting to stay out, so we walked down the street to a club called Siglo. The sign said it was a burlesque bar, but nothing was going on inside except a DJ spinning, and a bunch of people dancing on the main floor. We stayed there for about 30 minutes and then walked back down the street to the Holiday Inn Express. All 7 of us ended up hanging out in one of the hotel rooms, watching the Olympics (since we don't have TV in our flats in Glasgow) and eating Pringles, of course.

The next morning we woke up, said goodbye to Laura's parents, walked to the train station, grabbed a quick bite to eat, and then hopped on the train to Glasgow. This weekend made me miss my parents a lot. It was so nice being with parents, even though they weren't mine. I can't wait to see my mom and dad on April 6th in Dublin!

Walking into the train station in Edinburgh

Me and Laura at the train station

Sunday night we just hung around the flat, Monday I had my art history tutorial and then I found out all of my art history lectures are cancelled for this week. Briana and I went grocery shopping, went to Box Fit at the gym, and then I made myself a wonderful Chicken Tikka Masala dinner. Tuesday I had sculpture and we started working with a new model. We are working on sculpting a head right now. It is a life-size head (if not larger), which means these sculptures will be VERY heavy when we're done with them. I got a lot done on Tuesday, and I will try to take pictures of the sculpture next week. After sculpture I explored downtown Glasgow with my photography camera. I took some roads I have never walked down before and sort of got lost, but then found my way again. It was so much fun seeing the area of Glasgow where all of the businessmen and women are walking around on their lunch breaks. (I also got some beautiful photos for my Black and White Photography class.) When I got back to my flat, I asked if Laura and Briana wanted to go on a little adventure to take some more pictures while the sun was still high in the sky. We walked down a little alley on our campus and took a bunch of pictures to finish up our rolls of film. After our photo adventure, we decided we wanted to get sushi for dinner. Briana and I found a wonderful sushi restaurant not too far from our flat, so the three of us splurged on a huge sushi dinner.

Today Laura and I woke up a little earlier for photography because we wanted to stop somewhere for breakfast before class. We found a cute cafe called iCafe that had a great egg and bacon (toasted) sandwich. In class, we developed our film and made contact sheets...I can't wait to print pictures from this roll of film. After photography I had my first bagpiping lesson in a few weeks and it went okay. I need to work a lot more on making all of the notes clean and clear, but it will take some time. Oh, and did I mention it was snowing today? It's been snowing ALL day! I really don't understand this weather...I don't think Glaswegians understand it either. I took the subway home and I've been hanging around the flat since then because I had to do 2 loads of laundry and our dryer takes forever to dry my clothes.

Now, I'm going to continue working on my cover letter for an internship this summer in San Francisco. Until next time, I hope you all had a great weekend, and continue to have a good week.

Love and miss you all!

Love Always,
Jess

More pictures, less writing for this one.

Our egg's benedict ended up being WONDERFUL. I can't believe how good it turned out. I will definitely be making that again someday.

Thursday night was our friend Callum's birthday, along with 2 of his other friends. We went to a club downtown called Bamboo and danced all night. It was a great club and will be one of our new places to go on the weekend.

Friday night we went to a dance party at the Queen Margaret Union on campus called Cheesy Pop. They play old pop songs (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Nsync, etc.) and we all had a great time.

Laura, Briana, and Heather

Saturday morning we went on an adventure to an island in Scotland, the Isle of Cumbrae. We took the train from Glasgow Central to a town called Largs. It seems like Largs is the place to go in the summer because there are so many ice cream shops and it's a good place for fishing when it gets warmer. It was our friend Ted's idea to go on this adventure, so Laura and I woke up after a late night at Cheesy Pop to go with Ted, Liam, and another Laura. I am so glad I got up to go on the trip. The scenery was beautiful.

Saturday night we went to the Hive on campus at the Glasgow University Union because they were having a foam party. All of us got dressed in clothes we didn't mind getting ruined and had a great time on the dance floor as we were being covered in foam. Everyone was losing their shoes, but I was able to grab mine from the floor and hold onto them all night. Although it was a fun experience, I will not be going to another foam party anytime soon. For about 5 days after the party I had hives all over my body along with all of the other people who went to the party. I guess your skin gets so dehydrated from all of the soap/chemicals, so you end up getting hives. Yes, I know...I got hives from the Hive.

My feet after the foam party

Sunday night was of course the Super Bowl and we went to a pub called PJ Champs to watch the game. We got to the pub at around 7 or so to get a good spot, but the kick-off wasn't until around 11:45pm. I didn't think I would be staying up late to watch the whole game, but I got so into it. The game was great, and hanging out with all my friends here is always a good time.

Waiting for the game to start.

Still waiting...

After a great game...the Saints win! (Thomas and AJ had to take a picture together.)

Monday-Thursday= the normal week of classes

Saturday morning we woke up early to head to the main gate of Glasgow University. Me, Briana, and AJ bought tickets for the International Society's trip to the Highlands. I ended up taking over 100 pictures in those 2 days. The description of the trip is in the post below. We got home late Sunday night and then it was a normal week Monday-Thursday of classes.

Tuesday I had sculpture and we started a new piece. Last night (Thursday) she had us come into the studio from 7-9pm because she cut our class short last week. Here is my almost finished sculpture.

After sculpture, we went to our favorite club downtown, Bamboo, and danced all night like always. We found another music room in the back, so we left the main dance floor and stayed in there for the rest of the night.

Now it is Friday and I am going to get some work done today. I've been working on my resume, but it is hard because I don't know what I should be leaving out since it can only be 1 page. And cover letters are going to be difficult once I find the internships I definitely want to apply for. Laura and I are sitting in a coffee shop down the hill from our flat, called Beanscene. They have amazing chili bowls, so we're currently eating chili and on our laptops.

Until next time,

Love and miss you all!

Love Always,
Jess
